Search Engine Optimisation or SEO

SEO is a service that is often mis-sold. We frequently see emails and form fills from individuals who are selling position 1 or page 1 results on Google. Typically they set up Google advertising accounts to show that they can get you at what they describe as position 1 on a Google search. Of course, these pay per click links at the top of a Google search (which are in the light yellow background box) are not actually as a result of Search Engine Optimisation.

SEO isn't really the dark art that those selling it would have you believe. The basics can really be considered as:

  • Careful coding of your site to make the most of your content.
  • Links to your site from relevant sources.

Google themselves provide Webmaster guidelines, to direct both us as the creators of your website, and you as the customer, in the right direction. We'd recommend that everyone reads these guidelines and their helpful advice about search engine optimisation.

With Microsoft pushing their "Bing decision engine" on UK television right now (May 2010), they will be slowly regaining some ground on Google's monopoly on searches.

SEO is not a magic wand to increase your business' turnover, it is a process of increasing your website visibility so that genuine customers find you, and your information, easily.
